Setting off from Milan, we were determined to explore Brescia and Verona in a single day. A train ride from Milano Centrale whisked us to Brescia in about an hour. There, we spent the morning touring the city’s beautiful piazzas and Roman ruins. In the afternoon, we hopped on another train for the 40-minute journey to Verona, where we explored the enchanting historic town.
Just a heads-up, we only explored the attractions from the outside. Depending on your interests and which museums or castles you want to see, you might need more time. In fact, you could easily spend a full day in Brescia and another in Verona instead of rushing through both in one day (like we did!).
What to do in Brescia?
Brescia is a hidden gem in northern Italy, offering a rich history, beautiful piazzas, and stunning Roman ruins.
Upon arrival, we embarked on a walking tour to explore Brescia’s must-sees! Join us step by step as we navigate the charming piazzas nearby. These squares are perfect for strolling, relaxing, and soaking up the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
Piazza del Mercato
Our first stop was Piazza del Mercato. We walked around exploring the vast square and discovering the different shops.

Piazza Vittoria
Next up was Piazza Vittoria, a charming square in Brescia known for its elegant architecture and lively atmosphere. In one of the buildings, you’ll find a peculiar sight: a giant rhino suspended from the ceiling, a unique and intriguing feature that adds to the square’s character.

Piazza Paolo VI
Also known as “Piazza delle due Cattedrali” (Square of the Two Cathedrals), is the heart of Brescia. Dominated by the contrasting yet complementary styles of the Duomo Vecchio (Old Cathedral) and Duomo Nuovo (New Cathedral), this piazza embodies the city’s rich past. The piazza’s beauty is further enhanced by the presence of two elegant fountains, adding a touch of tranquility to the lively atmosphere.
With plenty of shops in the square, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate while admiring the historical cathedrals.

Brescia Castle
The walk up the stairs to Brescia Castle is a delightful climb, offering glimpses of the city unfolding below with each step. As you ascend, you’ll encounter locals casually enjoying their morning walks around the castle grounds. Brescia Castle itself is a magnificent medieval fortress. Explore the castle’s mighty ramparts, and enjoy the breathtaking panoramas it offers.

Piazza del Foro and Parco Archeologico di Brixia Romana
On our way back to the train station, we explored the UNESCO World Heritage Archaeological site of Brixia. This vast area includes the Roman Forum, the Capitolium Temple, and the Theater. Right in front of Brixia, you’ll find Piazza del Foro, home to the impressive Capitolium Temple.
