Staying in Zurich, we seized the opportunity to visit not just one, but two countries in a single day! We crossed the border twice, exploring Liechtenstein’s capital, Vaduz, and Austria’s medieval town, Feldkirch. Find out how we got there, what we did and the lessons we learned!
How to visit 2 countries in one Day?
1- Vaduz
Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, is a charming little town nestled amidst the scenic beauty of the Rhine Valley. Though small, we fell in love with Vaduz, its peaceful streets and picturesque views.
How we got to Vaduz?
Liechtenstein, lacking its own airport, is accessible from either Switzerland or Austria. As we were staying in Zurich, we took the train from Zurich HB to Sargans (approximately 55 minutes).
At Sargans, we can either take either Bus 11 (direction Feldkirch) or Bus 12E (direction Vaduz), and disembark at Vaduz Post in around 30 – 40 minutes.
We used our Swiss Travel Pass to hop on and off trains and buses to Vaduz. To learn more check out the Lessons Learned from our Switzerland Trip.
What to do in Vaduz?
Admire the Cathedral of Vaduz
Visit St. Florin Cathedral, and appreciate its beautiful stained-glass windows and peaceful atmosphere.

Walk past the government district
As you walk from the Cathedral towards the town, you’ll reach Peter-Kaiser-Platz square which houses the government and parliament buildings.

Step back in time at the Liechtenstein National Museum
Next you’ll find the national museum where you can learn about Liechtenstein’s rich history and culture. The museum’s collection includes archaeological artifacts, folk art, and exhibits on the country’s political and social development.
Get your passport stamped at Liechtenstein Tourism Center
For 3 CHF, you can obtain a souvenir passport stamp commemorating your visit to Liechtenstein. You can also purchase souvenirs and take a photo sitting on a replica throne adorned with a king’s crown! Additionally, the center offers maps to help you navigate the city’s landmarks.
Stroll through the charming Old Town
Vaduz’s Old Town is a delightful area to explore on foot. Wander through narrow alleys lined with colorful houses, shops, and cafes. Be sure to stop by the Rathaus (Town Hall).

Embark on a scenic hike to Vaduz Castle
This neo-Gothic fortress, perched high above the town, serves as the official residence of Liechtenstein’s Prince. While the castle’s interior remains private, the journey offers breathtaking panoramic views of Vaduz that unfold as you ascend.

The trek to Vaduz castle takes about 20-30 minutes by foot. The trail starts just beside Brasserie Burg restaurant, where you can follow the directional signs towards the castle along the way. Though the path has a slight incline, it’s an enjoyable walk.
As you are ascending, don’t forget to look towards the city and enjoy panoramic views encompassing the entire city of Vaduz and the majestic Rhine Valley below. It’s the perfect place to capture unforgettable pictures!
Stroll across the Alte Rheinbrücke
You can also take a stroll across the old Rhine bridge, a wooden bridge that connects Vaduz to Switzerland. The bridge offers beautiful views of the Rhine River.
What we ate?
Before continuing our journey to Feldkirch, we stopped for lunch at Vanini Café bar.
We tired some delicious plates though not local:
- Tomato salad with organic burrata and vegan Italian dressing
- Grilled organic veal sausage with sauteed potatoes
- Grilled organic salmon trout fillet on white wine sauce

2- Feldkirch
Feldkirch, a charming town nestled in the foothills of the Austrian Alps, offers a delightful blend of history, nature, and culture.
How we got there?
We took Bus 11 for a 40 minutes ride from Vaduz post to Feldkirch. Note that Swiss Travel Pass does not cover transportation to Feldkirch, a separate ticket must be bought.
What to do in Feldkirch?
Immerse yourself in Feldkirch old town history
Stroll along the narrow cobbled streets lined with colorful buildings and discover the town’s rich past. The well-preserved medieval architecture is a sight to behold, transporting you back in time.

Enjoy the panoramic view from Schattenburg Castle
Towering over the town, Schattenburg Castle is a must-visit for history buffs. Explore the ramparts, dungeons, and chambers, and learn about the region’s fascinating history. The Schattenburg Museum showcases a collection of weapons, armor, and everyday objects that provide a glimpse into life in the Middle Ages. Don’t miss the beautiful panoramic view of Feldkirch old town overlooking the Alps.

Visit Dom St. Nikolaus
Cathedral of St. Nicholas, built in the 15th century, is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Admire the stained-glass windows, intricate sculptures, and stunning Baroque altarpiece.

Stroll along the river
Take a leisurely stroll along the banks of the River and soak in the picturesque scenery. The calming sound of flowing water and the fresh air will help you unwind and rejuvenate.

What we bought?
We bought Styrian pumpkin seed oil, a famous Austrian product. To check the salad recipe we tried, visit our blog A taste of Austria.
Feldkirch lessons learned?
We didn’t know everything in Feldkirch closes at 6 pm! We took our time touring and thought we’d buy souvenirs later. The only store that was open after 6 pm was at the train station and no we didn’t find any souvenirs there!
Also check the bus schedules not to miss the last bus back to Vaduz and then back to Sargans.
Wishing you memorable experiences crossing the borders!
